Calling himself a “pro-life leader,” Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell put out a statement and a campaign video in support of anti-abortion protesters gathered in D.C. and Juneau on Wednesday, the 41st anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Treadwell is in a three-way race for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. Since entering the race, he has veered to the right, most notably on social issues such as abortion.
“Every person has a purpose and path in the world and I firmly believe life begins at conception,” he wrote. “I have worked with pro-life groups in Alaska for decades. I’ve fought to help pass the parental notification initiative and to clarify ‘medical necessity.’ As Senator, I will fight to make sure tax dollars are spent to save lives, not take them away.”
Recently, the state passed regulations that dictate that the State of Alaska’s Medicaid program will no longer pay for abortions unless a doctor deems such abortions “medically necessary.”
Thousands of people protested in the cold in Washington D.C. on Wednesday. In Juneau, about 30 people protested in the pouring rain in front of the state Capitol Building.
President Obama also put out a release today. “We reaffirm our steadfast commitment to protecting a woman’s access to safe, affordable health care and her constitutional right to privacy, including the right to reproductive freedom,” he wrote.
Obama also said that his administration aims to “reduce the number of unintended pregnancies, support maternal and child health, and continue to build safe and healthy communities for all our children.”

Will he “fight” equally as hard to fund the social programs necessary to support these children? Or is he one of those who thinks himself or herself a hero for saving life yet after the government forces the pregnency to term it is “Gods will” if things don’t work out so well and certainly not his fault or responsiblity.
I find this laughable. Little Mead, all grown up and transformed into a made-for-tv conservative. Isn’t this the same guy who supported Assembly woman Selkregg who was one of the most liberal, pro-gay rights. Pro-choice Anchorage officials ever ? But, that was before transformation. Wasn’t Mead part of the DEC leadership that was impossible to get permits from in a timely fashion ? Yep, that’s him. Mead’s campaign seems to be a lot – – it’s not inspiring nor is it honest. Mead, Alaskans are NOT nearly as stupid as you think they are. I would encourage you to keep at it as your antics take on a comedic relief the election cycle needs. Maybe next week you can be Super Conservative and leap buildings in a single bound.
Mead obviously is ready to step up and fight for what is best for our state! Finally there is someone willing to take action instead of sitting back and “talking the talk.” Mead stands by the beliefs of the people of Alaska!
I applaud Mead Treadwell for not being afraid to say what he thinks and stand up for his beliefs. I congratulate him for being a man who continues to fights for the beliefs of him family and his state even when confronting sensitive issues, that are often avoided. They need to be discussed and Mead has shown time and again that he is not afraid to do so. To me it is obvious that he is the leader that Alaska wants and that Alaska needs.
Finally, a man who takes a stand on the issue. For far too often we see lame politicians beat around the bush of sensitive topics, fearing what others might think. Treadwell is a leader, as he takes positions and defends them well. His successful record only proves this even further- he stands for what he believes is right and time as shown that he has been right in doing so. What Alaska needs is a man who is continually correct and fights for the interest of us. Before politics, comes Alaska. Here we have a man who loves his state and people and above all wants to serve them and their interests.
