Confusing quote of the day

“The inadequate rate of reimbursement by the Indian Health Service to Alaska’s tribal health system is another example of a broken promise by the federal government. The State of Alaska should not be expected to backfill this expense.”

Gov. Sean Parnell’s spokeswoman Sharon Leighow in an ADN story about how Medicaid expansion would boost federal funds for Alaska Native healthcare. But had Parnell chosen to expand Medicaid, the federal government would backfill this expense by paying 100 percent of the cost for three years and 90 percent after.

Reform instead repeal gaining traction

Granted, I’m biased. Thanks to ObamaCare, I’m able to buy affordable health insurance on the private market for the first time. But soon, thousands of Alaskans will be as biased as I am. It’s not happening in Alaska yet, but Republican elsewhere are waking up. From the NYTs:

‘”It’s no longer just a piece of paper that you can repeal and it goes away,’ said Senator Ron Johnson, Republican of Wisconsin and a Tea Party favorite. ‘There’s something there. We have to recognize that reality. We have to deal with the people that are currently covered under Obamacare.'”

Former legislator Niilo Koponen passes

nilloFormer Alaska legislator Niilo Koponen died peacefully at the Fairbanks Pioneer Home on Tuesday. As one person put it on his Facebook page, “(t)hey don’t seem to make Alaska legislators these days like Niilo Koponen.” There will be a memorial gathering to honor his life at Pioneer Park Civic Center in the afternoon of Jan. 5, 2014. More information will be posted on the family blog here.

Here’s a short remembrance written by a grandson, Max, republished below with permission of the family:

“He was born in 1928. He grew up in the Bronx, the son of Finnish immigrants, attending the NY School of Music and Art. He was the first white student at the historically black Wilberforce University. He met my grandmother folk dancing and they homesteaded in Fairbanks, Alaska and they raised five children. He left Alaska a few times, to earn degrees from Harvard’s Ed School and from the London School of Economics. He was a principal, fire fighter, and later Representative to the State House for 10 years. He helped found the local Head Start, credit union, and Quakers. He always seemed to inspire those around him.

The Sunday sauna at my grandparents’ place has been running for more than 50 years. The ways I think of Sunday sauna are similar to how I think of him: Open and welcoming to all. Without pretense. Full of conversation on endless topics. Quiet, rousing, bold, rugged, and sophisticated. Intense. Without parallel.

He was, in my experience, many things I aspire to be, among them kind, caring, and welcoming of every person, no matter their background or beliefs, and interested in making a better world, one individual action (and one individual) at a time. He believed a better world was possible and worked to make that vision a reality.”

Don Young upbraids Park Service comptroller

Whatever you say about Rep. Don Young, he upbraids well. On Thursday, Bruce Sheaffer, a comptroller with the National Park Service, was on the other end of it. The subject was a hearing on H.R. 3294, a bill which would allow states to control management of federal lands for states willing to pay 50 percent of the costs associated with that management. The federal government would retain ownership. Skip to minute 1:13 to see how Young weaves in King George, the Taj Mahal and Chevys.

Koch brothers group attacks Begich on ObamaCare

Americans for Prosperity, the Koch brothers’ funded group, announced that it was spending $3.5 million on anti-ObamaCare ads targeting three of the most vulnerable Senate Democrats who are up for re-election next year. Among them is Mark Begich. The others are Kay Hagan of North Carolina and Mary L. Landrieu of Louisiana.

From what I can tell, all of the ads feature some variation of a woman talking directly to the audience. As Begich knows, and as the Koch brothers are catching on to, Alaska women will likely decide the outcome of the Senate race in Alaska.

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin makes Gov. Parnell look progressive

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, when sworn into office, promised to “offend the Constitution of the United States.” She’s offending all right:

“In September, Fallin vowed to prohibit Oklahoma’s National Guard from providing benefits to married same-sex couples, directly violating a Pentagon directive and a presidential decree. Now, after a Pentagon pushback, Fallin has doubled down, cutting spousal benefits for the entire Oklahoma National Guard, including straight couples. The Republican governor, in other words, would rather deny every soldier benefits than grant a few gay ones the rights they have been federally guaranteed.” Read more here.

Quote of the day: The Cheney family feuds over gay marriage

“Liz has been a guest in our home, has spent time and shared holidays with our children, and when Mary and I got married in 2012 — she didn’t hesitate to tell us how happy she was for us. To have her say she doesn’t support our right to marry is offensive to say the least.”

From Heather Poe’s Facebook page. Poe is Liz Cheney’s sister in law and is married to Liz’s sister Mary. On Sunday, Liz told Fox News that she supports traditional marriage. Liz is running for incumbent Republican Sen. Mike Enzi’s seat in Wyoming.

Quote of the day: Sarah Palin talks to Matt Lauer about healthcare reform

“The plan is to allow those things that had been proposed over many years to reform a health-care system in America that certainly does need more help so that there’s more competition, there’s less tort reform threat, there’s less trajectory of the cost increases, and those plans have been proposed over and over again. And what thwarts those plans? It’s the far left. It’s President Obama and his supporters who will not allow the Republicans to usher in free market, patient-centered, doctor-patient relationship links to reform health care. “

Sarah Palin speaking to Matt Lauer on Monday’s “Today” show. Only one thing’s clear: Pain did none of these things while she was a governor.

Ad of the day: Politics meets zombie zeitgeist

Some of the radio and print ads Art Hackney has done over the years have been pretty funny. But I don’t recall a funny ad for a local candidate, like the one below, since David Dittman did Tom Fink’s successful mayoral campaign. The ad below is the brainchild of Zombies for Responsible Government, which is supported by a group of businessmen and a Republican-oriented super PAC. It attempts to define Nathan Fletcher, a Democratic candidate for mayor of San Diego, as a politician who flip-flops on the issues.

Peter Micchiche and his sister Maria Downey lose their father

Alaska state Sen. Peter Micchiche and his sister, longtime KTUU-Channel 2 news anchor Maria Downey, lost their father “Pete” on Saturday, Oct 26. Pete was 83 years old. A celebration of his life will occur on Nov. 9 at 10:00 a.m. at the Blessed Sacrament Church in Oakland Park, Florida.

Here’s the Facebook post that Sen. Micchiche wrote about his father:

“My Father passed away Saturday and I will likely be out of touch for the next few days. Peter Frank Micciche (June 1, 1930 – October 26, 2013) lived all 83 years teaching my family to be better people, to care about those that need us most and to always take the time to do the right thing. I know where he is right now, but miss him nonetheless.

He and Mom spent 62 years together through thick and thin; they never believed in a Plan B for their marriage and taught us the same. He also served our country stateside during the Korean conflict.

My Dad was a loving, colorful, and very tough individual that was always there for us when we needed him. He was larger than life, and I believe than death as well. He is a big part of me that I will miss all of the remaining days of my life. I spoke to him daily in the last days and have no regrets.

My primary message here? Call the people you love, forget the little things and learn to forgive if such an obstacle exists. You never know when the hourglass will run out of sand and having no regrets is a significantly better alternative.

As I told him the day before he died. I am proud to have had him as my father, and I’m extremely proud be his son. I strongly believe he left us with a legacy and the philosophy that helps make the world a better place.”

Republican Party imposing primary purity to punish purity

From the New York Times:

“[T]he National Republican Senatorial Committee this week informed a prominent Republican advertising firm that it would not receive any contracts with the campaign committee because of its work with a group that targets incumbent Senate Republicans. Even more striking, a senior official at the committee called individual Republican Senate campaigns and other party organizations this week and urged them not to hire the firm, Jamestown Associates, in an effort to punish them for working for the Senate Conservatives Fund…” NRSC spokesman Brad Dayspring said, “Purity for profit is a disease that threatens the Republican Party.”

Quote of the day: A 16-year-old girl speaks out about sexual abuse

“I have been molested countless times by old men, young men and boys my age. I’ve been almost raped once and that’s enough to make me stand up here in front of you all here today to stop all of this… I don’t mean to disrespect you elders out there, but there’s elders out there in our communities doing this. You don’t turn 60 or 65 and automatically get respect. You have to earn it.”
